Build 2.2.104 is on-line.

It contains many fixes for the Mac OS X version of ECMerge. There are new features also for Unixes (ability to choose the explorer to view folders) and Auto-run for files copy/mirroring and ’write merge result’ commands on all platforms. Auto-run is activated by the user on wish and can be disabled by pressing Shift.

For a few months now, we have been working on easing the comparison of word processors documents.

WordPerfect is one of such word processors, we could find a good converter to simple text called ”wpd2text” from the libwpd project. We thus developped a plug-in which detects the presence of wpd2text somewhere in your PATH directories and adds it a text converter for the *.wpd mask.

You can easily compare your WordPerfect documents by installing ECMerge, downloading wpd2text and the plug-in (called built_in.js)  from the ECMerge converters page.

Some weeks ago, we released ECMerge ActiveX.

One of our goals was to let ECMerge work in all common versions of Internet Explorer (we test it on IE 6, 7 and 8).

ECMerge ActiveX worked in IE 6 without a problem, OK, not that easy to end a multi threaded application placed in a DLL in particular because of DLL load/unload events mutexes.

Imagine what happened in IE7 and 8… no more JavaScript events with the <script for=”"> notation, attachEvent which does not work either. Finally the VBScript approach works (i.e. <script language=”vbscript”>Sub Object_EventName()</script>).

ECMerge ActiveX supports the full panel of features of ECMerge, you can differentiate folders and an event called AddView is fired each time the application should open a document… this time the security features of IE come in.

As of Internet Explorer 8, there is a new security feature which run ActiveX plug-ins in a separate process depending on the trust level that it gives to the ActiveX… it means that two instances of the same ActiveX with different trust levels will be actually run in different processes. This is a problem since the ECMerge ActiveX expects the documents that it creates to be viewed in the process of creation. ECMerge verifies that and fails nicely if the document is not hosted by the right process. One user side solution: ensure that the FHAxMerge component which create a FHAxMergeDocument object and the one opening it are in the same page.

This new release handles ZIP files as well as many other ZIP based formats such as OpenOffice or MS Office XML formats which are indeed ZIP files with (mostly) XML inside.

The ActiveX version is now on-line as well, you can test it directly from our website. The idea here is to let you access all of the power of the ECMerge software from within your web site (in your Windows server or Internet Explorer clients) or your application. The ActiveX version is licenced under “a la carte features” pricing (i.e. we provide you with a serial number limiting features to what you need and pay for).

The new release 2.2.103 is in the tube and will be released soon.

We are working on the documentation these days and try to make it easier to start with. ECMerge has a huge documentation in relation to the tremendeous amount of scriptability and features (hundreds of macros, tens of native ECMAScript / JavaScript objects to modelize comparisons). We added a new simpler tutorial, previous tutorials are now considered Advanced tutorials: still guiding but more adapted to advanced users.

The macro “Easy folders sync” is augmented to setup in one click a bidirectional synchronization. As well two new buttons “Keep orphans” and “Remove orphans” are introduced which give a faster access to that feature (previously you had to use Solve with typical rules and setup the rule correctly).

Few days ago, we realized that the current solution in ECMerge to rely on external software to unzip files was cool for the plethora of formats… but in fact ECMerge already had built-in support for .zip, why continue to use external tool for .zip if it works built-in?

Xtract now supports .zip full expansion (just that, really not a super-power unzipper). So you’ll be able to compare zips on any platform, no need to install anything else than ECMerge.
This new version will be bundle with ECMerge 2.2.103
